The Truth set me free

I first heard the gospel in prison. People who are incarcerated like me either do not know God or have turned away from Him. You would not wish to be in our company or have anything to do with us. Even my own parents gave up on me and stopped visiting. Yet God did not forget us. I had lost my freedom, but being in prison helped calm my heart and I began to do some initial reflection on my religious belief. I had heard messages about repentance and salvation, and I knew there was God Jehovah, and also the Holy Spirit. I asked Jesus to come into my heart. At the same time, I was also clear about the severity of my crimes – robbery, theft, drug trafficking, and drug abuse.

I came to Breakthrough Missions only after serving my seventh prison term. Here, the first task I was assigned was to sweep its grounds. This was an sprawling compound with much vegetation and the grounds were always littered with dry leaves. After a few days at the task I began complaining to God, “You have given me a broom and my job is to sweep the grounds the whole day. Is this how my life is going to be transformed?” But I realized later that the path of repentance was like the job I was doing – everyday I would need to sweep away all the filth, bitterness, selfishness, pride and other sins from my heart.

I have been at Breakthrough Missions for three years and a half. I attend Bible courses willingly and enjoy participating in its activities as well as those held in the churches. I am willing to keep learning and to change my ways. I thank God for the opportunity to hear the gospel and for this place which offers me help in repentance and change.

As a center for drug rehabilitation through the power of the gospel, Breakthrough Missions prepares its residents for reintegration into society. To this end it has set up several social enterprises including a Breakthrough Café, and I am currently deployed in this establishment. I receive training in service and our leaders remind us that our mission is to serve people and glorify God. Today I am no longer handcuffed, and I am free from the bondage of drugs which had driven me to steal, rob and scrounge to satisfy the craving. How did I gain this freedom?

Jesus Christ says, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free…..

If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:32,36)

Thanks be to the Lord!
